Trinity Repertory Company’s 2019 production of The Prince of Providence brought one of Rhode Island’s most controversial figures to stage: Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci. A polarizing figure in the state’s history, he became nationally famous for both his charm and criminality, leaving behind a larger-than-life legacy.
But how do you tell someone’s story — especially one as dramatic as Cianci’s — accurately? Where does fact live in a theatrical production? How do actors develop engaging performances based on real-life people?
Join Rhode Island Historical Society as it hosts playwright George Brant, actor Rebecca Gibel, and journalist Mike Stanton on Thursday, November 12, in a virtual conversation. They’ll discuss their unique experiences in telling Cianci’s story, as well as explore topics like fact and fiction in theatre, telling sensitive stories, and the future of The Prince of Providence beyond Rhode Island.
You do not need to have seen the play to participate in the event – free and open to the public.
